Lei Feng, the Hero of China

By Dan Lin

ESL 0200

If you ask a five year old kid or elder who their hero in China is, the answer will be Lei Feng, who helped people and never revealed his name when he did something good. He was a selfless soldier of the People's Liberation Army of the People Republic of China. He was born on December 18, 1940, and died in an accident on August 15, 1962. He became a model for all Chinese people to help others.

Lei Feng was a driver in the transportation corps. He had to drive the car all day when he got assignments and did not have time to study. But he put his books into a bag and carried them. So, he was able to study in the cab when the car was stopped or he did not have any assignments.

In the summer of 1960, Lei Feng was sick. On his way to the army, he passed through a construction site and saw everyone was working hard. So he joined them, pulled a cart and filled it with bricks. At noon, all the workers took a rest. They sat around Lei Feng and asked his name. But Lei Feng said, “I am doing things for the social society, same as you, I just do it as my responsibility.” At the afternoon, these workers sent a letter of appreciation to him after they made inquires about his name. Finally, everybody knew he did a good thing even though he was sick.

Soldiers have vacation time to go home and visit their family. But Lei Feng spent his vacation doing things in favor of others. Once, he got a vacation and went home. One his way home, he saw two old men who were like a couple. They were using the washbasins and cups to fill with the water. Because it was raining outside. Then he told those two men that he will help them to repair their roof. After he finished repairing the roof, it was time for him to go back to the army. The old men asked him what his name was. He just told them he was a soldier.

In 1961, Lei Feng was regularly invited to give reports at different places. Once, he was setting in the waiting room in a train station and he saw some people standing around a woman and a little kid. He asked people what happened to them. People told him this woman wanted to see her husband and she went from Shan Dong to Ji Lin, where her husband worked. But she lost the ticket and money. Then Lei Feng used his own money to buy a ticket for her. She said with tears, “Sir, what’s your name? Where do you live?” He said, “I am a soldier of the of the People's Liberation Army. I live in China.”

One day in May, it was raining. Lei Feng wanted to go to Chen Yang. He woke up at five o’clock in the morning, brought some steamed buns, and then he put on his raincoat. On his way to Chen Yang, he met a woman who was carrying her child on her back and pulling along another little girl, walking to the train station with difficulty. Then Lei Feng took off his raincoat, gave it to the woman, and held the little girl in his arms. On the train, he saw the girl was shivering all over with cold, and then he took off his coat and gave it to her. He thought maybe they did not have breakfast, so he gave them his steamed buns. It was still raining when they arrived at Chen Yang. Lei Feng sent them home. The woman said gratefully, “How can we thank you? He said, “That’s what I should do.”

On August 15, 1962, it was also a rainy day. Lei Feng, the selfless soldier was killed in an accident. After his death, chairman Mao Zedong called the nation to learn from the spirit of Lei Feng. He also wrote an inscription: “Xiang Lei Feng tongzhi xuexi”, which means learn from comrade Lei Feng. I still can remember that when I was in elementary school and middle school, we saw the inscription everyday because the schools painted it on the wall. Thus, the students won’t forget. People set March as the month of activities of learning from Lei Feng. Most schools plant trees during March; students do volunteer work to celebrate him. He is a hero for all Chinese people.
